Abstract
Blow flies (Calliphora vicina) surgically deprived of their optic lobe s were found to retain the ability to distinguish between short and lo ng day lengths for the production of diapausing or nondiapausing larva l progeny. In this species, therefore, the compound eyes and optic lob es are not essential for photoperiodic reception, and the optic lobes cannot be the site of the photoperiodic clock. The brain emerges as a likely location for both functions. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Scienc e Ltd
