The evaluation of the use of educational software must take account of
usability as well as learning and, crucially, the integration of tiss
ues concerned with usability and learning. Checklists, a very common a
pproach to the predictive evaluation of educational software, do not t
ake account of this integration. A review of two well known checklists
illustrate this. A structured evaluation model known as the Jigsaw Mo
del is described. Empirical evidence is provided to demonstrate that t
eachers' awareness of integration can be greatly improved by using the
model. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.
