The enlargement of the European Union with Central and Eastern Europea
n countries (GEE countries) is a difficult task in relation to the agr
icultural sector The Union has problems with the Common Agricultural P
olicy. The CEE countries have problems with the transition to market e
conomy in the agricultural sector: Which strategy of integration shoul
d be chosen? A quick adjustment to the CAP raises severe problems for
the Union and the CEE countries. Nevertheless a change of the CAP is n
ecessary at feast in the longer run. The main efforts in the CEE count
ries should focus on the establishment of efficient internal markets,
and the establishment of a Free Trade Area among the CEE countries inc
luding the agricultural sector.
