Similar to the trends in other industrialized countries, Denmark has s
ince the mid-1960'ies experienced substantial changes in the demograph
ic components which are determining the reproduction rate and the form
ation of families. At present the development is characterized by a wi
despread formation of couples at an early age, which in most cases is
commenced without a marriage certificate. Further the fertility level
has decreased and there has been an increase in the average age of fem
ales at first child birth. These changes have also taken place in the
three selected geographic areas; however most of the deviations from t
he national average that were prevailing before the changes ave still
present.
