The taxonomic status of the common North American stream-dwelling wate
rstrider Aquarius remigis Say is poorly understood. We describe a new
species (Aquarius remigoides) based on genetic data and provide 2 char
acters that allow specific diagnosis. In addition, we furnish a phylog
enetic tree based on genetic distance estimates for 11 waterstrider sp
ecies, and compare these relationships to those of Andersen (1993) bas
ed on morphological characters.
