Today's knowledge-based, technological society demands much from highe
r education and the corporate world-demands that often can be met thro
ugh effective university-industry partnerships. This paper will explor
e the issues involved in such partnerships and examine a partnership t
hat currently exists between Southern Illinois University and the Hewl
ett-Packard Company. The paper begins with a historical review of such
partnerships and concludes with a description of the particular diffi
culties that a college or university can have when dealing with a high
-tech partner.
