Abstract
The products of the reaction of Hofmann's base, [CHg4O(OH)(2)OH2](n), with cone. nitric and sulphuric acid are tetrakis(nitratomercurio)meth ane monohydrate, C(HgNO3)(4) . H2O and bis(sulphatomercurio)bis(aquame rcurio)me C(HgSO4)(2)(HgOH2)(2). The structures were characterized by IR spectra and single crystal X-ray diffraction. In both structures th e carbon atom is tetrahedrally surrounded by four mercury atoms.
