The effects of Fe2+ ions on hemolysis induced by photooxidized psorale
n (POP-hemolysis) were investigated. It was shown that POP-hemolysis w
as strongly activated by Fe2+ ions. This effect occurs by two mechanis
ms. First Fe2+ ions induce latent damages in erythrocytes, that can be
revealed upon the POP action. The second mechanism is the interaction
of Fe2+ ions and POP resulting in the generation of free radicals tha
t are toxic for erythrocytes.
