MODELING BINDER MIGRATION DURING DRYING OF A PAPER COATING

This paper deals with the physical mechanisms that occur during the dr ying of paper coating. An experimental study on the migration of natur al binder (starch) is briefly presented. Using these experimental resu lts, an original model of paper coating drying is validated. This mode l, which is based on diffusive liquid transport, takes into account th e shrinkage of the coating and the migration of the starch during dryi ng. The results of this research lead us to suggest that starch migrat ion occurs until the coating is totally consolidated.
