We report on a patient with a history of alcoholism who developed hype
rbilirubinemia induced by treatment with clomethiazole during two hosp
italizations. After discontinuation of clomethiazole symptoms of cholo
stasis improved. Clomethiazole is a thiazole analogon and is chemicall
y related to thiamine (vitamine B-1). It can be administered as tablet
s, capsules, mixtures, and a 0.8% solution. Because of its sedative, h
ypnotic, and anticonvulsive effects it is used in the treatment of alc
oholic delirium.
