Lignin precipitated from black liquor is a potential fuel for the kraf
t mill lime kiln. In this research, liquid fuels consisting of lignin-
oil-water mixtures were compared with natural gas, and with dry powder
ed lignin as fuel. Temperature profiles and calcination results are pr
esented. Precipitated lignin contains some residual sodium and sulphur
which could potentially hare detrimental effects on che kiln operatio
n. The fate of these two impurities in the kiln system was investigate
d; Sodium was found to be absorbed in the kiln refractory.
