Effluent from a CMP/newsprint operation was treated in two parallel la
boratory scale AS systems. Removal of BOD and RFA in excess of 90% was
achieved with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 24 hours. Sulphite
was oxidized rapidly to sulphate and treated effluents were free of ac
ute toxicity. In batch experiments, biological treatment produced the
removal of sulphite and toxicity at an HRT of around 12 hours. Under t
hese conditions, toxicity and sulphite were removed more rapidly than
BOD.
