Exploiting the information provided by the local variation rates of a
dynamical system, we show how an adaptive algorithm is able to recogni
ze and stabilize the unstable periodic orbits embedded in a chaotic at
tractor, through additive corrections to the dynamics. The relative we
ight of each correction is adjusted upon the size of the local expansi
on rate. Application of this method to chaotic Lorenz and four dimensi
onal Roessler systems is discussed.
