Abstract
We analyze the dynamics of a CO2 laser with a large Fresnel number. We note that the intensity is much higher than zero at any spatial point and the average frequency of the intensity fluctuations is of the sam e order of magnitude than the relaxation oscillations of the single mo de laser. Measurements of cross correlation functions of the temporal oscillations show a loss of spatial coherence and evidence of spatio-t emporal chaos.
