Abstract
This study identifies entry-level employment trends In technology, int erpersonal, and basic communication job skills over time using classif ied newspaper advertisements from standard metropolitan statistical ar eas (SMSAs) in the United States. These skills were selected from a se t of workplace know-hows listed in two editions of a U.S. Department o f Labor report, the Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skil ls (SCANS; 1991, 1992). The results indicate that classified ads speci fically requesting technical and interpersonal job skills have decline d, yet ads requesting basic communication skills have remained constan t, with a high percentage specifically requesting these basic skills.
