The small, arboreal goanna, Varanus caudolineatus, has a field metabol
ic rate of approximately 0.46 mt CO2 g(-1) hr(-1) and a daily water in
take requirement of approximately 31.6 mt kg(-1) day(-1) measured duri
ng the summer. V. caudolineatus held in a controlled-temperature envir
onment of 35 degrees C have lower metabolic (0.25 mt CO2 g(-1) hr(-1))
and water flux (24.9 mt H2O kg(-1) d(-1)) rates than those in the fie
ld. Body water content was approximately 80% for V. caudolineatus. Cop
