Abstract
In view of the renewed interest in the Cretaceous/Tertiary (K/T) bound ary in the type area of the Maastrichtian Stage, a historical account is presented of the litho- and biostratigraphy of the strata below and above this boundary, as well as the position of the boundary itself. Localities exposing uppermost Maastrichtian and lowermost Palaeocene d eposits are reviewed and for some of them, including the recently disc overed Geulhemmerberg site, lithologic logs are provided.
