Electronic states and the wavefunction localization lengths for non-pe
riodic GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As superlattices are calculated and also studied
experimentally using photoluminescence. Non-periodicity causes the fi
rst bound state to shift down in energy. A relation between the shift
in energy from the periodic case and the wavefunction localization len
gth is derived and used to obtain the localization length experimental
ly from photoluminescence measurements. The localization length thus o
btained is compared with the results from a direct calculation of the
wavefunction.
