Lithium niobium-phosphate glasses [(x Nb2O5(0.5 - x) P2O5) 0.5 Li2O]:
y Fe2O3 were studied using Fe-57 Mossbauer and infrared spectroscopy.
The use of both techniques gives new information about the structure a
nd crystalline phases in the pure glassy and glass ceramic systems. Th
e iron atoms are present as Fe3+ and Fe2+ ions and in both cases prove
d to be surrounded by six oxygen atoms (network modifier). Tile result
s suggest that the Nb ions occupy sites of average octahedral symmetry
. Precipitation of crystalline phases of LiNbO3 and Li3PO4 was detecte
d.
