The antibacterial and antifungal activities of several extracts and fr
actions from four endemic Canary plants, Ceropegia fusa Bolle (Asclepi
adaceae), Hypericum reflexum L. f. (Hypericaceae or Guttiferae), Mayte
nus canariensis (loes) Kunkel & Sunding (Celastraceae) and Plocama pen
dula Ait. (Rubiaceae), were determined. The antimicrobial study was ca
rried out by the dilution and diffusion methods and the results showed
good antibacterial activity but no antifungal activity. The MeOH extr
act from Hypericum reflexum was active against gram-positive bacteria
Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus
aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and against the gram-negative bact
erium Klebsiella pneumoniae.
