The compounds 3,3'-(1,3- and 1,4-phenylene)bis(1-aryl-2-propen-1-ones)
(1, 2), 1,1'-(1,3- and 1,4-phenylene)bis(3-aryl-2-propen-1-ones) (5,
6) and 1,1'-(2,6-pyridylene)bis(3-aryl-2-propen-1-ones) (7) have been
cyclopropanated by three different methods. It is observed that the re
action under phase transfer conditions is found to be a versatile tech
nique. The geometry of the products formed is evidenced by H-1 NMR spe
ctra.
