Abstract
Synthesis of substituted 5,6,7,8-hexahydro-2,7,7-trimethyl-5-oxo-quino lines 4a-f has been carried out by the condensation of 5,5-dimethylcyc lohexane-1,3-dione 1, aromatic aldehyde 2 and methyl beta-aminocrotona te 3a. Use of ethyl acetoacetate 3b in place of 3a gives the correspon ding 3-carbethoxy compounds 5a-g. Alternatively, the compound 5b has a lso been synthesized by the condensation of 1 with ethyl 2-(2'-nitrobe nzylidene)acetoacetate in liquor ammonia.
