As a result of improving the process of growing CdWO4 crystals, optimi
zing the scintillation light collection, and developing electronic cir
cuits for amplifying and forming signals, CdWO4 scintillation detector
s were created that achieve a record energy resolution of 7-8% and 10-
12% for 662 keV photons, for 10-20 and 80-150 cm(3) volumes, respectiv
ely. Because of a high level of crystal purity (Th-232 content is 4 x
10(-2) mBq/kg, Ra-226 content is 5 x 10(-2) mBq/kg), it is possible to
make low-background spectrometers based on these crystals for measuri
ng contamination of the environment with an ultimate detection sensiti
vity, e. g., 2 x 10(-13) Ci/kg for (TI)-T-208.
