The Raman amplitude when extended into the complex energy plane can ha
ve zeros in the right-half plane. Minimum phase approaches to invert t
he Raman excitation profile (REP) to recover the Raman amplitude are v
alid only for the case where the Raman amplitude does not admit zeros
in the right-half plane. A minimum phase algorithm applied to a REP gi
ves a unique amplitude, but this amplitude and its corresponding cross
-correlation function are wrong if the REP corresponds to a nonminimum
phase problem. The minimum phase treatment therefore does not carry a
ll possible physical information for a nonminimum phase REP.
