The efficacy of ofloxacin was compared with that of ciprofloxacin in t
he treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa urinary tract infections. Eight
y-seven clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa were tested with the use of
dilutions of the two drugs in Mueller-Hinton broth at pH 5.5 and in h
eat-treated human urine. Following a 25-hour incubation period and gro
wth monitoring and assessment, the minimum inhibitory concentration wa
s defined as the lowest concentration having no visible growth during
incubation. Nearly all strains of P. aeruginosa were susceptible to co
ncentrations of ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin between 20 and 80 mu g/mL.
Ofloxacin was found to be as effective as ciprofloxacin in P. aerugin
osa urinary tract infections.
