Sg. Weinrach et Kr. Thomas, THE COUNSELING PROFESSIONS COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY-SENSITIVE COUNSELING - A CRITICAL REASSESSMENT, Journal of counseling and development, 74(5), 1996, pp. 472-477
The authors pose questions in this article that are intended to stimul
ate more effective strategies to ensure gender, racial, and ethic dive
rsity in the counseling profession. The first question addresses the i
mplications of between-group versus within-group differences for the c
ounseling process. The second question examines the need to expand the
dialogue across all minorities. The third question asks who should co
nduct multicultural research. Various constituencies, including client
s, practitioners, counselor educators, scholars, and researchers are a
ffected. Inconsistencies are noted between the strategies now being us
ed to achieve diversity and the philosophical foundations of the couns
eling profession itself. Seven recommendations are made.
