The notion of invariants associated with differential equations introd
uced in Part I is used to compute consistent local errors in a finite-
element analysis. The procedure is illustrated by two simple examples-
a one-dimensional beam problem and a two-dimensional membrane problem.
It is also shown how the computed errors may be used for adaptive mes
h refinement. However, the primary intent of this paper is to introduc
e a new concept for calculation of local errors.
