Abstract
Primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major;cause of mortality w orld-wide, with a poorly understood pathogenesis. We review known aeti ological factors and the mechanisms whereby they are associated with t he development of hepatocellular carcinoma. The increasing knowledge o f the dysregulation of cellular growth control that occurs during HCC development is discussed in detail.
