Herbicide trials were conducted in 1990 and 1992 to evaluate several h
erbicides applied preemergence (PRE) for their effects on kenaf (Hibis
cus cannabinus L.) stand, height, and yield. Herbicides evaluated were
alachlor (3.36 kg al ha(-1)), atrazine (2.68 kg al ha(-1)), chlorimur
on + metribuzin (0.67 kg al ha(-1)), clomazone (1.68 kg al ha(-1)), cy
anazine (2.00 kg al ha(-1)), diuron (1.34 kg al ha(-1)), ethalfluralin
(1.00 kg al ha(-1)), fluometuron (2.00 kg al ha(-1)), imazaquin (0.17
kg al ha(-1)), imazethapyr (0.09 kg al ha(-1)), metolachlor (3.00 kg
al ha(-1)), metribuzin (0.50 kg al ha(-1)), norflurazon (1.70 kg al ha
(-1)), or pendimethalin (1.34 kg al ha(-1)). Plant stand was reduced i
n 1990 by alachlor, fluometuron, imazethapyr, or norflurazon. Stand wa
s reduced both years by atrazine, chlorimuron + metribuzin, clomazone,
cyanazine, diuron, imazaquin or metribuzin when compared to the untre
ated control. Stand was not affected either year by ethalfluralin, met
olachlor, or pendimethalin. All treatments caused significant kenaf in
jury expressed as phytotoxicity with the exception of alachlor, ethalf
luralin, imazethapyr, metolachlor, and pendimethalin. Kenaf height was
not affected by alachlor, ethalfluralin, imazethapyr, metolachlor, no
rflurazon, or pendimethalin. The only herbicides that did not result i
n kenaf yield loss were alachlor, ethalfluralin, imazethapyr, metolach
lor, or pendimethalin.
