Laboratory experiments are being undertaken to examine what influence
is exerted on the removal of alkalies and sulphur from blast furnaces
by charging a burden of slightly reduced basicity and by simultaneousl
y injecting fluxes through the tuyeres. Just a small shift in the inpu
t of fluxes from the furnace top to the tuyere level (20 kg/t HM) can
both appreciably increase the removal of alkalies with the slag and im
prove the desulphurisation. Such a mode of furnace operation appears s
uitable to reduce the discharge of alkalies via the blast furnace top
gas RE-HM and, at the same time, to attenuate the negative influences
of alkalies on furnace operation.
