The Communications Research Laboratory (CRL) is aiming to develop giga
bit satellite communication systems for the global information infrast
ructure (GII). As a first step, CRL planned high data rate (HDR) satel
lite communications experiments using the Japanese Engineering Test Sa
tellite-VI (ETS-VI). ETS-VI failed to reach a geostationary orbit, how
ever, and CRL then decided to use the NTT satellite known as N-Star fo
r the HDR satellite communications experiment. In this experiment, we
planned a data rate of 156 Mbps through a Ka-band transponder with a b
andwidth of 200 MHz. Data was transmitted as an HDTV signal in our pla
n. In this paper, we introduce the configuration of this experimental
system and the experimental items. Our next application experiment pla
ns are also explained.
