This paper describes the ASTRA Satellite System and its evolution from
a network for analogue TV and radio Direct-to-Home services via digit
al DVB/MPEG-2 transmissions and business applications towards a possib
le part of the Global Information Infrastructure. Beside the underlyin
g marketing strategies the unique ASTRA concept of satellite co-locati
on with intra-system back-up is highlighted as well as the core parts
of the DVB/MPEG-2 broadcasting system via ASTRA.
