CROP PROTECTION PRODUCTS OR PESTICIDES - A SEMANTICAL ESSAY

The term pesticide has, particularly in the German language, a negativ e connotation. Often, the usage of the term crop protection produce is proposed. However, this term is nor connotationally neutral either. I n this essay, connotation as well as denotation of the terms pesticide and crop protection products are examined. It is shown that the two t erms have a positive denotation; however, their connotation is differe nt. It is recommended to use, whenever possible, alternative terms wit h neutral connotation, such as herbicide, fungicide, or acaricide.
