A bilaminar consisting of a piezoelectric ceramic disk and a polymer d
isk was chosen to build a proximity detector in air. The influences of
the polymer and ceramic thicknesses on the transducer dynamic behavio
ur are investigated using a finite element model, for various configur
ations. The influence of the type of polymer is also studied. Prototyp
es functioning at frequencies higher than 200 kHz were built. They all
ow detection ranges higher than 2 meters, with a cheap amplifier.
