Abstract
The effect of dielectric tapering on the extraction efficiency of a Ce renkov Free Electron Laser is investigated. A self consistent dynamica l model in terms of the electron energy and the radiation phase is dev eloped. From numerical simulations based on this model it is shown tha t the extraction efficiency can be increased by a factor of more than two for moderate tapers in the dielectric layers.
