We discuss the dressing of constituent quarks with a pseudoscalar meso
n cloud within the effective chiral quark model. SU(3)(f) symmetry bre
aking effects are included explicitly. Our results are compared with t
hose of the traditional meson cloud approach in which pions are couple
d to the nucleon. The pionic dressing of the constituent quarks explai
ns the experimentally observed violation of the Gottfried sum rule and
leads to an enhanced nonperturbative sea of q (q) over bar pairs in t
he constituent quark and consequently in the nucleon. We find 2.5 time
s more pions and 10-15 times more kaons in the nucleon than in the tra
ditional picture. The (d) over bar-(u) over bar asymmetry obtained her
e is concentrated at somewhat smaller x and the (u) over bar/(d) over
bar ratio is somewhat different than in the traditional meson cloud mo
del of the nucleon.
