Abstract
The paper begins with a short history of the Private Finance Initiativ e (PFI). It then describes, by way of example, two successful deals in the transport sector and one emerging deal in the National Health Ser vice. A brief survey of the current state of the PFI follows. The fina l section comments on some unresolved problems.
