A time division multiple access algorithm is studied that is particula
rly optimized for the scheduling of packet transmission in an Asynchro
nous Transfer Mode (ATM) operating passive star network. It is based o
n a constant bit rate (CBR) reservation scheme. Periodically generated
time slot reservations are queued in a global slot reservation queue
and served according to the first-in-first-out discipline. The queuein
g delay calculations using a Markov chain description of the algorithm
show excellent agreement with experimental values obtained by a hardw
are model. It is suggested that by using the CBR reservation scheme in
stead of a variable bit rate reservation the performance of the passiv
e star network may significantly be enhanced.
