Abstract
The stability conjecture of Cauchy horizons of black holes suggested b y Helliwell and Konkowski is used to investigate the (2+1)-dimensional (3D) black holes under perturbations of infalling null dust and of bo th outgoing and infalling null dust. The results given by this conject ure agree with that from the mass inflation scenario for 3D black hole s. For 3D black holes, we show that the Cauchy horizon is unstable and the corresponding singularities exist.
