Several methods of preparing polyurethane/polyacrylate composite latic
es are briefly discussed in this article. Copolymerization of a new mo
nomer with acrylate monomers contributed very much to increasing the t
ensile strength of the polymer films. Then, reactive low molecular wei
ght polyurethane aqueous dispersions were prepared and mixed with acry
late polymer latices having composite polymer films of fairly good pro
perties were formed. As the third method, blending polyurethane latice
s with acrylate polymer latices produced films with improved compatabi
lity by crosslinking with formaldehyde. Finally, seed emulsion polymer
ization proved to be successful in grafting acrylate polymer chains on
to polyurethane and producing polymer films with balanced properties a
nd particularly low brittle temperature.
