A. Steinbuchel, SYNTHESIS AND PRODUCTION OF BIODEGRADABLE THERMOPLASTICS AND ELASTOMERS - CURRENT STATE AND OUTLOOK, Kautschuk und Gummi, Kunststoffe, 49(2), 1996, pp. 120-124
Polyesters consisting of hydroxyalkanoic acids (PHA) represent in addi
tion to proteins, nucleic acids, polysaccharides, lignin, polyphosphat
es and polyisoprenoides an additional class of biosynthetic polymers t
hat are synthesized in large quantities by living matter. PHA are like
natural rubbers and their derivatives naturally occurring thermoplast
ics and elastomers and are currently produced biotechnologically with
bacteria and in the future with genetically engineered plants. Occurre
nce, biosynthesis and bio-technological production as well as structur
es and properties of PHA are summarized.
