The results of treatment of 25 patients with algetic form of chronic p
rostatitis (ChP) in the age from 29 to 54 (average: 33.5) using transr
ectal microwave hyperthermia (TRMH) with the instrument Prostcare (Bru
ker Spectrospin SA, France) are discussed. The treatment procedure inc
luded 5-6 TRMH 60 minute sessions with periodicity of 2-3 days each. P
rior to TRMH all patients have been treated unsucessfully for a long t
ime for ChP, including 10 for bacterial ChP and 15 for congestive ChP.
Indications and contraindications for TRMH are discussed. Calcific Ch
P was not a contraindication for TRMH. The first results of treatment
have been satisfying. For 20 (80%) patients after the 2nd or 3rd TRMH
session a significant decrease of pain was observed and for 18 (72%) t
he pain completely disappeared at the end of the treatment. During rec
tal palpation a decrease in pain and pastosity of the prostate was fou
nd. In 6 observations the erectile function improved. No negative infl
uence of TRMH on the composition of: the ejaculates was found. For two
patients with congestive stoneless ChP the treatment had to be interr
upted because of the appearance of catarrhal proctitis in one case and
complication of ChP due to selection of wrong temperature conditions
in the TRMH learning phase in the other case. Two patients received a
second TRMH course with good results 8 months later because of ChP rec
urrence.
