VOLTAMMETRIC METAL TITRATION OF PARTICLE DISPERSIONS

Characterization of surface groups by voltammetric titration is more c omplex than often assumed. This article deals with some of the methodo logical pitfalls, paying special attention to the lability characteris tics of the surface complexes involved. The amounts of cadmium complex ing surface groups of some latices were estimated and compared with th e amounts of groups found by conductometry and potentiometry. The lowe r the fraction of carboxylic groups, the lower the ratio between the n umber of cadmium(II) complexing groups and the total number of deproto nated groups.
