First 'benchmark' calculations are reported for the resonant behaviour
of the 3p --> 4s and 3p --> 3d structures in both the 3d photoionizat
ion cross section, sigma(3d), and 3d photoelectron anisotropy paramete
r, beta(3d) for Mn(3d(5)4s(1)4p(1 6)P). It is shown that, unlike Cr a
nd Cr, there are only small differences in sigma(3d) and beta(3d) bet
ween Mn and Mn. It is found that, similarly to an analogous predictio
n for Mn+, the ordering of the 3p --> 4s and giant 3p -->, 3d resonanc
es in beta(3d) for Mn(3d(5)4s(1)4p(1)) (and other differently excited
Mn atoms) is opposite to that in sigma(3d). Investigators are thus pr
ovided with species for which the effect of the permutation of the res
onance structures in beta(3d) as compared to sigma(3d) can be verified
experimentally much more easily than for Mn+, because these species a
re neutral atoms. The calculated results were obtained within the 'spi
n-polarized' random phase approximation with exchange.
