Abstract
The hydrodynamic stability of a liquid column resting on a gas in a ve rtical tube with its upper end closed is analyzed. The maximum height above which the interface is unstable is given as a function of the Bo nd number and the density ratio. The instability is shown to be monoto nic, i.e., nonoscillatory.
