Abstract
In an earlier paper,(10) which described the behaviour of a web plate in shear with a single stiffener, the relatively large effect of out-o f-plane forces exerted on the stiffener by the web, compared to the te nsion field forces, was noted. This paper presents a design method, ba sed on strength and stiffness criteria, which takes rational account o f the effects of out-of-plane web forces and of the tendency for the s tiffened panel to buckle overall. The method is validated by reference to the earlier theoretical and numerical parametric study.(10) A meth od for multiple stiffeners is also proposed, but this has not yet been validated.
