We introduce the field of transverse nonlinear optics, and discuss som
e perspectives for applications, namely the use of spatial solitons fo
r parallel information processing, femtojoule switching and logic gate
s in vertical cavity surface emitting lasers. We illustrate the quantu
m aspects of nonlinear optical patterns, focusing on quantum images an
d critical fluctuations in the degenerate optical parametric oscillato
r below threshold.
