The accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power station resulted in additi
onal radiation exposure in Germany in the range of variance of the nat
ural background exposure. Adequate measures were taken, and recommenda
tions expressed to ensure that the additional radiation exposures rema
ined within the range of variation also in regions with higher exposur
es. The epidemiological studies conducted after the accident indicated
no detectable health impacts as a consequence of the additional expos
ures. A Radiation Protection Provision Act passed in the meantime htrs
helped to repair the inadequacies recognized during the event in the
areas of environmental radioactivity monitoring and provisions for suc
h occurrences (limits, measures to be taken).
