The work described in this paper was completed some ten years ago, but
could not be published until now because of the confidentiality terms
of the research contract with Sir Robert McAlpine and Sons Ltd. The p
aper describes tests on 17 reinforced concrete cylindrical vessels, ea
ch with a hemispherical dome end, subjected to an external pressure of
up to 20 N/mm(2) (equivalent to 2 km water depth), Their structural b
ehaviour and failure pressures show good agreement with theories devel
oped at the University of Manchester. The paper shows that, with the a
ddition of appropriate safety factors, reinforced concrete cylinders c
an be safely designed to resist high external pressure.
