Abstract
We discuss the structure of one-loop counterterms for the two-dimensio nal R(2) gravity and for the dilaton gravity in the covariant quantiza tion scheme, and study the effect of those quantum reparametrizations which map the conformal-gauge picture to the harmonic-gauge one. The c orresponding structures are shown to be equivalent to the introduction of (2 + epsilon)-dimensional terms into the initially two-dimensional theory. Such terms may be important in view of Weinberg's approach ba sed upon the epsilon-expansion and the renormalization group technique s: in particular, they drive the theory towards a non-trivial fixed RG -point beyond two space-time dimensions.
